Joe Biden Warns of ‘Dark Days’ for America Amid Trump’s ‘Assault on Free Speech’

Former U.S. President Joe Biden has described the current political climate as “dark days” for America, warning citizens to remain vigilant and hopeful amid what he called President Donald Trump’s attacks on free speech and challenges to executive limits.

Speaking in Boston on Sunday, October 26, after receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Edward M. Kennedy Institute, the 82-year-old Democrat delivered his first public remarks since completing radiation therapy for an aggressive form of prostate cancer.

“Since its founding, America has stood as a beacon of the most powerful idea in human history — that freedom is stronger than any army and greater than any dictator,” Biden told the audience.

He cautioned that the strength of the nation depends on a balance of power between the presidency, Congress, and the judiciary — a balance he said was being undermined as the federal government faces one of its longest shutdowns in history. Biden accused Trump of exploiting the funding lapse to expand his authority.

“I can’t sugarcoat it — these are dark days,” Biden admitted, while expressing faith that the country would “find its true compass again” and emerge “stronger, wiser, and more just” as long as Americans “keep the faith.”

The former president commended federal employees, academics, comedians, and even some Republicans who have publicly opposed what he described as authoritarian tendencies within the Trump administration.

“America is not a fairy tale,” Biden concluded. “For 250 years, it’s been a constant struggle between peril and possibility — but we always get back up.”

Biden’s speech marked one of his first major appearances since his office revealed in May that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer that had spread to his bones. He completed his radiation treatment earlier this month.

The former president withdrew from the 2024 re-election race last year, citing health concerns and pressure following a difficult debate performance against Trump. He later endorsed his former vice president, Kamala Harris, who ultimately lost the election to Trump.
