NPFL Condemns Violence as Kano Pillars Fans Attack Referees, Players After 1–1 Draw

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has strongly condemned the violent scenes that erupted following Sunday’s 1–1 draw between Kano Pillars and Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano.

Chaos broke out shortly after the final whistle when Kano Pillars supporters stormed the pitch, attacking match officials, players, and staff of Shooting Stars in anger over a late equaliser.

The home side had taken an early lead through Mustapha Jibrin in the ninth minute, setting the stage for what appeared to be a home victory. However, Adams Mustapha’s stoppage-time goal for 3SC sparked outrage among sections of the home crowd, turning jubilation into violence.

In a statement issued by NPFL Chief Operating Officer Davidson Owumi, the league body condemned the incident and vowed to impose strict sanctions once official match reports are reviewed.

“We condemn in the strongest terms any act of violence, intimidation, or misconduct directed at players, match officials, or fans,” Owumi stated.

“This isolated incident is being treated with utmost seriousness, and appropriate actions will follow upon review of the Match Commissioner’s and Referees’ reports.”

He further confirmed that the league had reached out to match officials and representatives of Shooting Stars to ensure their safety.

Meanwhile, the management of Kano Pillars acknowledged the disturbance but maintained that it was swiftly contained.

“Immediately after the final whistle, a few misguided individuals attempted to cause disorder. However, thanks to the quick intervention of our stewards and security agencies, the situation was promptly brought under control,” the club said in a statement.

The club also confirmed that several suspects had been apprehended and handed over to the police, pledging full cooperation with security authorities.

“Kano Pillars FC will work closely with the authorities to ensure that anyone found guilty faces the full weight of the law. In addition, the club will impose a 10-season ban on all identified troublemakers from accessing the Sani Abacha Stadium,” the statement added.
