Former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has described many so-called Yahoo boys as brilliant young minds who require redirection rather than condemnation.
Speaking in Onitsha during a youth-led convention, where he served as a guest speaker, Obi urged leaders to recognize the potential and creativity of Nigerian youths engaged in internet fraud, stressing that their energy could be channeled into innovation and national development.
“I told the youths that some of our so-called Yahoo boys are geniuses who need redirection, not condemnation,” Obi said. “Their creativity and courage, if properly guided, can drive innovation and national growth. Our challenge is to channel their energy from deception to productive enterprise.”
He warned that Nigeria could not achieve greatness while celebrating corruption and rewarding dishonesty, adding that such behavior mirrors the moral decay within the political class.
Obi emphasized that while money has its importance, true wealth lies in integrity, character, and purpose.
“Real wealth uplifts both the individual and society. It promotes education, reduces poverty, and creates opportunities for others to live dignified lives,” he stated.
The former governor revealed that he cut short his trip from the United Kingdom to attend the event, driven by his desire to encourage Nigerian youths and address the growing obsession with materialism.
He also condemned all forms of violence and religious intolerance, stressing that justice, fairness, and merit—not tribe or religion—should guide Nigeria’s progress.
“No religion or tribe buys bread cheaper than another,” Obi remarked. “Nigeria is richly blessed; what we lack is the will to do what is right. Once we embrace fairness and merit, our nation’s greatness will naturally unfold.”
