Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has proposed a deal to exchange Ukraine’s domestically produced drones for US Tomahawk cruise missiles during his visit to the White House for talks with President Donald Trump.
Zelensky emphasized that Kyiv urgently needs the long-range Tomahawks and offered thousands of Ukrainian-made drones in return.
“Ukraine has thousands of our production drones, but we don’t have Tomahawks. That’s why we need Tomahawks... The US can have our drones — that’s where we can cooperate,” he said.
However, President Donald Trump expressed caution over the proposal, noting that the United States must prioritize maintaining sufficient weapon reserves.
At the start of their working lunch, Trump remarked, “Hopefully they won’t need them. Hopefully, we can end the war without thinking about Tomahawks.” He later added, “I also have an obligation to make sure America stays fully stocked. We need Tomahawks for the United States, too.”
On the question of a possible peace settlement, Trump avoided a clear stance on whether Ukraine might have to give up territory to Russia, responding only, “You never know... War is very interesting. You never know. You just never know with war and peace.”
Trump’s remarks reflect his shifting position on the conflict. Earlier, he had suggested that “land swaps” could be a path to peace, but later reversed course, stating that Ukraine could reclaim all its occupied territories. His latest comments suggest he is waiting to see how future negotiations unfold before committing to any firm position.
