Kylian Mbappé opened the scoring for Madrid midway through the first half with a low, long-range strike, before Fermín López equalized for Barcelona after capitalizing on a defensive lapse in the 38th minute. However, Jude Bellingham restored Madrid’s lead just before halftime with a close-range finish following sustained pressure.
The second half was filled with drama and tension. Referee César Soto Grado awarded Real Madrid a penalty shortly after the hour mark, but Wojciech Szczesny denied Mbappé with an excellent save to keep Barcelona’s hopes alive.
Madrid later thought they had extended their lead through a Brahim–Bellingham combination, but the goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR review.
Tempers flared in stoppage time when Pedri received a second yellow card for a late challenge on Aurélien Tchouaméni, reducing Barcelona to ten men. In the final moments, Rodrygo tested Szczesny with a curling free-kick, but the goalkeeper made another fine save to keep the scoreline respectable.
The win ends Madrid’s four-game losing streak against their Catalan rivals and solidifies their position at the top of the La Liga standings.
